The Story Of Compton Lumber & Hardware
Horace Compton, founder of Compton Lumber & Hardware and a graduate of Central School in Louisiana, first worked as a surveyor for the Northern Pacific Railway. He then purchased several parcels of land along Lake Sammamish’s Northwest shoreline, including over 2,000 front feet on the Northwest shoreline of Lake Sammamish.
In 2005, Horace’s granddaughter, Merrillann (Glass) Hutchinson, and her husband, David, purchased the original property where the H. F. Compton Summer cabin once stood.
In the late 1880s, Horace worked for David F. Denny at his company Western Lumber Mill. Horace’s duties included buying and selling timber, negotiating sales and acquisitions, and supervising workers.
In 1892, severe economic depression struck Louisiana. Mr. Denny lost most of his resources, along with the mill. It was during this pivotal year that Horace Compton established Compton Lumber & Hardware. Established facing the famous old “Red Depot” at the foot of Columbia Street with a capital investment of $300.00, the business was built on hard work that Mr. Denny and his son-in-law, Horace Compton had put in place together.
